Movado Polygraph (c. 1951)

This is an extremely rare world-time watch made by Movado in the early 1950s. The watch has a special function that allows you to read the time in different cities around the world: you do this by rotating the bezel to line up the city where you are with the red 24 hour hand; then you read off the time in the other city against the 24 hour marker on the edge of the dial. It's a simple and ingenious solution to what was a new 'problem' created by the proliferation of international travel and communication in the years after the second world war.

The dial is showing some signs of it's age, but I feel this can be overlooked for such a rare watch - it's the only one I've ever seen outside of the pages of a book. I have no idea how many of these were produced by Movado, but one can only guess the number to be quite small due to the scarcity of survivors.

The stainless steel case is in good order and at 36mm is a large size for a watch from the 1950s. The case back has the original owner's name engraved in a rather delicate dot-marking. The bezel rotates smoothly and the movement has been fully serviced and is running very strongly and to time.  

Overall an extremely rare and interesting watch which I am certain will delight the new owner.
