The Story

Sometimes, the rarest watches aren’t the flashiest ones — the ones that whisper, rather than shout.

This is not your usual Patek, the ref. 3418 was an understated experiment: a steel, convertible watch built for engineers and scientists and released in 1958. While the rest of the world was making ever-flashier gold dress watches, Patek quietly released this clever piece with a “convertible” case that could switch between a strap and a bracelet. This watch has the original lug configuration fitted, the steel bracelets come on the market occasionally, however to my mind this watch belongs on a leather strap, rather than a Milanese bracelet, consequently I never sought to acquire a bracelet for it.

Under the dial beats the Patek cal 12-400. This watch is part of the earlier generation of ref 3418 and features the non-antimagnetic variation of the movement. D

Today, the Ref. 3418 sits in that sweet spot of watch collecting: genuinely rare, historically interesting, and beautifully wearable. It’s a watch you could wear daily without anyone realising quite how special it is — except the few who really know.
